So, I've been writing a lot about Vietnam but I felt like having a go at digging up some memories from the past. In the summer of 2015, I took part in the Camp America exchange programme (I will probably write a separate post later!) - this was probably when the travel bug bit me hard.
Here's my quick guide to the states, photo gallery style!
1) Iowa- this is where I lived and worked as a summer camp counsellor for about 3 months. I remember being picked up at the tiny airport and the long drive through lots and lots of fields- basically all farmland besides the city of Dubuque! It does however, sit next to the stunning Mississippi River, which is definitely worth a visit in everyone's lifetime!
2) Illinois- sadly, I didn't get to Chicago despite being so close, but I did visit a very pretty town called Galena, a compilation of old buildings, old-fashioned shops and small clothing boutiques. Made a lovely afternoon out for our time off camp.
3) Michigan- the countryside and the lakes were beautiful- probably not such a well-known, touristy hot-spot, but well worth a visit, just for the scenery.
5) New York- the city of course!
6) Pennsylvania- I've seen Philadelphia (the Rocky steps and the Liberty Bell) and made a fascinating visit to an Amish village. I have to say, witnessing a herd of goats climbing up a children's slide has been one of the oddest things I've seen...
7) District of Columbia/Washington DC. If you're into history, definitely the place for you!
8) Massachusetts- The accent takes a little getting used to, but Boston itself is a great town, and nowhere near as busy as New York! Oh, and take a trip to Harvard University while you're in town- gorgeous campus.
And that wraps up my tour of the states (so far!) I will probably add another post on my Camp America experience (and a gallery for all the American food of course!)
As the Americans say- go big or go home! x
